I got an IM the other day from Phil the “Cheetahman” asking me if I was interested in doing the City Chase this year.  Phil is a fan of the TV show “The Amazing Race,” something I’ve only watched perhaps an hour ever.   He described the City Chase as a kind of watered down version of the show.   At any rate, the weblink to the details looked interesting , and I figured Phil would be good for a pint or two after the event so I agreed to team up with him.  It looks like the transport modes are either by foot or on public transit.  I was bummed to learn no bikes were involved.   I’m not a runner by any standard, while Phil runs the occasional 10 or 15k race.  I’m hoping to be in decent shape from bike commuting for this race come June.

    So Andrew,

How was the City Chase? I thought it looked like an interesting event, but like you, I am definitely NOT a runner. How did you guys rank? Is it more difficult when you aren’t a naturally gifted runner?

I’ve been checking out your blog for a while now and have been waiting to hear how it went.

It was a lot of fun, but very taxing! We were happy to finish all 10 challenges within the time limit. We ranked somewhere around 320 out of 550 teams. We certainly learned a lot about how the race works, and we can’t wait to try again next year. We really just wanted to check it out for a lark, and our goal was to finish so we achieved that.

I think we would spend more time solving the clues first so we could plan our route out a little better, and use transit as much as possible. I’ll be doing some training for running for sure. We were feeling great until we had a very physical challenge (boot camp type of thing) immediately after being immersed in a very cold swimming pool for another challenge. I ended up getting some nasty leg cramps after that.
